The Just-in-Time Asthma Self- Management INtervention (JASMIN) is a mobile application for children with asthma that incorporates real-time asthma symptom tracking and management recommendations with online social support features and educational materials. JASMIN aligns with Bronfenbrenner’s socioecological model and meets the guidelines of the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program. Since JASMIN is based on the socioecological model, its intent is to encourage support and promote communication among children with asthma, their peers, family, school personnel, and providers leading the child to self-management behaviors.
The research team is currently conducting a pilot to determine the feasibility of JASMIN with various ages, asthma severity, and parent/guardian participation. Following completion of the pilot of JASMIN, we aim to submit a proposal (RO1) to optimize the JASMIN intervention and determine the various aspects of the mHealth app that most effectively lead to self-management behaviors. JASMIN currently includes the following components: 1) environmental data, 2) educational materials, 3) competition badges, 4) Peak flow tracking, 5) asthma symptom tracking, 6) chat features, and 7) reminder/alert prompts. All components of JASMIN can be shared with family, select peers, school personnel and providers.
